Founded as a gymnastics club on July 1, 1899, Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft (TSG) 1899 Hoffenheim emerged in the small village of Hoffenheim located in southwest Germany. The soccer department didn't come into existence until after World War I.
In their early years, TSG Hoffenheim competed mainly at the local level. Success was sporadic yet valuable; it provided motivation for the players to improve and persevere. However, major breakthroughs remained elusive until business tycoon Dietmar Hopp entered the scene in 1990 (source).
Hopp's investment propelled the team from obscurity into professional football. He built state-of-art training facilities and helped them afford quality coaching staff, positively transforming their performance levels over time.
