Borussia Mönchengladbach was founded on August 1, 1900, in the city of Mönchengladbach in western Germany. The club's formation was initiated by football enthusiasts Willy Lange and Franz Görgens who gathered local sportsmen to establish a new team dedicated solely to football ^1^. Originally named FC Borussia, they took their moniker from the Latin word "Prussia," which refers to the former German state.
In their early years, Borussia Mönchengladbach experienced struggles and successes. They started playing in local leagues before becoming part of the West German Football Association (Westdeutscher Spielverband) in 1919 ^2^. In 1920, they merged with another local team - Turnverein Germania 1889 - forming VfTuR MG.FC Borussia^3^. Their most notable early achievement came when they won the Lower Rhine Championship for three consecutive seasons between 1924-25 and 1926-27 ^4^.
The post-war period saw further growth for Borussia Mönchengladbach as they joined Oberliga West (the highest level of regional competition) in the late '40s. By this time, players like Albert Brülls had started making appearances for the club — Brülls would go on to become a key player for both his club and national side during his career^5^.
